Stuart Sutcliffe (23 June 1940 – 10 April 1962). Original bassist for the Beatles from formation, in Hamburg, untill his death. Also a talented painter, poet and singer. Fell in love with Hamburg based photographer, Astrid Kircherr and remained with her untill his death. He is often referred to as the fifth beatle, along with Pete Best. In 1962 he collapsed in an Art class, but died of the brain haomorragh in the ambulance. His best friend, John Lennon, did not attend his funeral but according to Yoko Ono he spoke of him nearly daily. His life is the inspiration behind the film and stage musical, Backbeat.
